I was tasked with creating a typographic identity for a design conference in a specific country (Jamaica). I designed avisual identity representing the sophistication and modernityof contemporary Jamaican culture. The project guidelinesrequired me to use a monochromatic color palette. I ensuredthe identity system was versatile enough to be used on variousmaterials, such as T-shirts, name badges, and posters.I incorporated subtle cultural motifs and elements from thehost country or its capital. This created a rich tapestry thatblends contemporary aesthetics with cultural relevance.
Located in the heart of Jamaica, the vibrant city of Kingston served as the main inspiration for this design project.After thorough research into Kingston’s rich cultural heritage, I decided to base my designs on two iconic symbols: thetriangle from Jamaica’s flag and the circular structure of the National Heroes Park flower garden.
The circular nature of the building inspired me to experiment with fluid and curved forms for the initial wordmark. However, the sharp, angular lines of thetriangle in the flag led me to create an alternate wordmark that provided a stark contrast.
After careful consideration, I decidedto go with the triangular concept for the final design because it symbolizes Jamaica’s legacy and represents speed and acceleration, similar to the homeland of world-renowned sprinters like Usain Bolt. The triangle also adds a modern and dynamic touch to the graphic identity collection, paying homage to the nation’sspirited essence.
I revisited the design for more cohesion, resulting in a refined visual narrative where order and balance coexist with the dynamic energy of the triangle.
In the final design stage, I opted for regimented triangular textures instead of freeform designs for the poster. Aligning the typography with the triangles resulted in a seamless graphic and textual synthesis that my instructor appreciated.
This design philosophy was extended to the name badges for aconsistent aesthetic. The result was an identity that embodied triangular precision and unity.
