As part of my project, I took on the challenge of reviving “REVOLVER” magazine, which is well-known for its coverage of North American heavy metal and hard rock music. The design of band gear cases, with their stencil and grunge typography, inspired me to redesign the magazine’s masthead. Employing the stencil spray technique infused a fresh, raw, and unfiltered aesthetic into the magazine’s branding.

The highlight of my redesign project was a feature article on Nine Inch Nails, which delved into Trent Reznor’s tumultuous journey. The report explored his struggle with addiction and the moments that ultimately led him to achieve Oscar-winning success. Reznor’s story was one of contrasts, and I sought to mirror this dichotomy in my design choices. Using a monochromatic palette of black and white, I encapsulated the duality of Reznor’s darkest hours versus his brightest achievements.

I intentionally used lines and block elements across the spreads to add another narrative layer. These elements not only visualized the obstacles Reznor faced but also emphasized his resilience. Each line and block symbolized a hurdle or challenge, but with every page turn, the reader witnessed the enduring spirit of an artist who continually transcends his barriers. This echoed his unyielding journey from darkness to light.
